GUIDELINES FOR AUTHORS

MEDIA WISATA

Media Wisata is a peer-reviewed scientific journal published by Sekolah Tinggi Pariwisata AMPTA Yogyakarta. The journal publishes high-quality scholarly works in tourism studies, tourism management, hospitality, destination development, sustainable tourism, digital tourism, tourism marketing, tourism innovation, and related fields.

These Guidelines for Authors establish the requirements for manuscript preparation and submission to Media Wisata. Authors are expected to comply with these guidelines to ensure the quality, consistency, transparency, and integrity of the publication process.

Manuscripts that do not meet the basic requirements may be returned to the authors for technical revision before proceeding to the editorial and peer-review process.

 

TYPES OF MANUSCRIPTS

Media Wisata accepts the following types of scholarly manuscripts:

1.1 Original Research Article

An original research article presents results of empirical research based on quantitative, qualitative, or mixed-method approaches.

1.2 Conceptual Article

A conceptual article presents a theoretically grounded argument, conceptual framework, model, or critical analysis that contributes to the development of tourism scholarship.

1.3 Literature Review Article

Media Wisata may consider systematic literature reviews, scoping reviews, bibliometric studies, or other rigorous literature-based studies that demonstrate a clear methodology, synthesis, research gap, and scholarly contribution.

Literature review articles must not merely summarize previous publications. They should demonstrate a systematic and transparent process for identifying, selecting, analyzing, and synthesizing relevant literature.

 

MANUSCRIPT LENGTH

The manuscript should normally contain approximately 4,000–7,000 words, excluding the reference list, tables, figures, and supplementary materials.

Manuscripts exceeding the recommended length may be considered when the additional length is justified by the complexity and scholarly contribution of the research.

The manuscript should normally correspond to approximately 12–20 pages using the Media Wisata manuscript template.

The quality and scientific contribution of the manuscript take precedence over page count.

 

MANUSCRIPT FORMAT

Manuscripts must be submitted in Microsoft Word (.doc or .docx) format using the Media Wisata manuscript template.

The manuscript should follow these formatting requirements:

1. Paper size: A4
2. Layout: Two columns
3. Top margin: 2 cm
4. Bottom margin: 3 cm
5. Left margin: 2.5 cm
6. Right margin: 2.5 cm
7. Main font: Times New Roman
8. Main font size: 12 pt
9. Line spacing: single
10. Article title: 16 pt, bold
11. Author names: 10 pt
12. Tables and figures: appropriately sized and readable
13. Manuscript file: Microsoft Word format

Authors are strongly encouraged to use the official Media Wisata manuscript template.

 

LANGUAGE

Manuscripts may be written in:

1. Bahasa Indonesia;
2. English

Manuscripts written in Bahasa Indonesia must follow the current Indonesian spelling standard, Ejaan Bahasa Indonesia yang Disempurnakan (EYD) Edisi V, and use appropriate academic language.

Manuscripts written in English must use clear, grammatically correct, and academically appropriate English.

Authors are responsible for ensuring that the manuscript has been adequately proofread before submission.

 

TITLE

The title should:

1. Accurately represent the main topic of the study;
2. Clearly identify the research focus;
3. Be concise and informative;
4. Avoid unnecessary abbreviations;
5. Avoid overly general statements; and
6. Preferably not exceed 15 words.

The title should allow readers to understand the main research topic without ambiguity.

 

AUTHORS AND AFFILIATIONS

The manuscript must provide complete information for all authors, including:

1. Full name;
2. Institutional affiliation;
3. Department/program where applicable;
4. City and country;
5. Orcid, where available; and
6. Email address of the corresponding author.

The author list must accurately reflect authorship at the time of submission.

All individuals listed as authors must have made a substantial contribution to the research or manuscript and must approve the final version.

Changes to authorship after submission require approval from all authors and must be justified to the Editor.

 

ABSTRACT

1. The manuscript must contain an abstract in Bahasa Indonesia and
2. The abstract should normally contain 150–250 words.
3. The abstract should clearly and concisely describe:
4. Background or research problem;
5. Research objective;
6. Research method;
7. Principal findings; and
8. Main conclusion or implication.
9. The abstract should not contain:
10. Citations;
11. Tables;
12. Figures;
13. Unexplained abbreviations; or
14. Information that does not appear in the main manuscript.
15. The English title and abstract should be written in clear academic English.

 

KEYWORDS

Each manuscript should contain 3–5 keywords.

Keywords should:

1. Represent the main concepts of the article;
2. Avoid unnecessarily broad terms;
3. Be written consistently in bahasa indonesia and english; and
4. Preferably use terms commonly recognized in tourism research.

INTRODUCTION

The Introduction should establish a clear scholarly rationale for the study.

It should generally include:

1 Research Context

Explain the broader academic and/or practical context of the research problem.

2 State of the Art

Present a critical synthesis of relevant and recent scholarly literature.

The literature review should demonstrate the current development of knowledge rather than merely list previous studies.

3 Research Gap

Clearly identify what remains unresolved, underexplored, inconsistent, or insufficiently explained in previous studies.

The research gap should be supported by relevant literature

4 Novelty

Clearly state what is new or distinctive about the study compared with previous research.

Novelty may relate to:

1. Theoretical contribution;
2. Methodological contribution;
3. Empirical context;
4. Conceptual model;
5. Analytical approach;
6. Destination or tourism phenomenon; or
7. Practical contribution.

5 Research Objective and/or Questions

Clearly state the research objective and, where appropriate, research questions or hypotheses.

6 Contribution

Explain the expected contribution of the study to tourism scholarship and/or tourism practice.

The Introduction should establish a logical connection between the research problem, research gap, novelty, objective, and contribution.

 

LITERATURE REVIEW AND THEORETICAL FRAMEWORK

A separate Literature Review section may be used when necessary, particularly for theoretical, conceptual, or literature-based studies

The literature review should:

1. Use relevant and credible scholarly sources;
2. Prioritize recent literature;
3. Include seminal works where theoretically relevant;
4. Demonstrate critical synthesis rather than descriptive listing;
5. Establish the theoretical foundation of the research;
6. Explain relationships among relevant concepts or variables; and
7. Support the development of hypotheses, propositions, or conceptual frameworks where applicable.

For quantitative studies, hypotheses should be logically derived from the theoretical framework and previous empirical evidence.

For qualitative studies, the theoretical or conceptual perspective should be clearly connected to the research questions and analytical approach.

 

METHOD

The Method section must provide sufficient information to allow readers to understand, assess, and, where appropriate, replicate the research process.

The method should include relevant information such as:

Explain the research approach and design, such as:

1. Quantitative;
2. Qualitative;
3. Mixed methods;
4. Experimental;
5. Survey;
6. Case study;
7. Ethnographic;
8. Bibliometric;
9. systematic literature review; or
10. other appropriate approaches.

2 Research Setting

 

Describe the research location, context, period, or setting where relevant.

3 Population, Sample, or Participants

For quantitative studies, explain:

1. Population;
2. Sampling technique;
3. Sample size;
4. Inclusion/exclusion criteria where applicable.
5. For qualitative studies, explain:
6. Participants/informants;
7. Selection criteria;
8. Sampling strategy;
9. Data saturation or information adequacy where relevant.

4 Data Collection

Explain the data sources and data collection procedures.

5 Research Instruments

Describe the instruments or measurement procedures used in the research.

Where applicable, explain instrument development, validity, reliability, or other quality-assurance procedures.

6 Data Analysis

Clearly explain the analytical techniques used.

For quantitative research, report the relevant statistical procedures and assumptions where applicable.

For qualitative research, explain the analytical approach, coding procedures, thematic analysis, triangulation, member checking, or other relevant trustworthiness procedures where applicable.

For systematic or bibliometric reviews, describe the databases, search strategy, inclusion/exclusion criteria, screening process, analytical procedures, and software used where applicable.

7 Research Ethics

Where research involves human participants, personal data, vulnerable groups, animals, or other ethically sensitive subjects, authors must explain relevant ethical considerations.

Where required by the applicable institutional or research-ethics framework, authors should provide information regarding ethical approval or permission.

 

RESULTS

The Results section should present the findings clearly and systematically.

Results should directly address the research questions, objectives, or hypotheses.

Authors should:

1. Present findings accurately;
2. Avoid unnecessary repetition;
3. Use tables and figures where they improve clarity;
4. Provide sufficient explanation of statistical or qualitative findings; and
5. Distinguish findings from interpretation.

Tables and figures should not merely repeat information already presented in the text.

 

DISCUSSION

The Discussion should interpret the findings rather than simply repeat them.

The discussion should:

1. Explain the meaning and significance of the findings;
2. Relate findings to relevant theories;
3. Compare findings with previous research;
4. Explain similarities and differences with previous studies;
5. Identify theoretical implications;
6. Identify practical implications where appropriate;
7. Discuss unexpected findings where relevant; and
8. Explain the contribution of the study to tourism knowledge.

The Discussion should demonstrate how the findings address the research gap identified in the Introduction.

 

RESULTS AND DISCUSSION

For manuscripts where separate Results and Discussion sections are not appropriate, the two sections may be combined as Results and Discussion.

The combined section must clearly distinguish:

1. Empirical findings; and
2. Interpretation and scholarly discussion of those findings

CONCLUSION

The Conclusion should provide a concise answer to the research objective or research questions.

It should:

1. Summarize the main findings;
2. Clearly state the principal scholarly contribution;
3. Avoid repeating the entire results section;
4. Avoid introducing new evidence; and
5. Remain consistent with the findings.

Where appropriate, authors may include:

1. Theoretical implications;
2. Practical implications;
3. Limitations; and
4. Recommendations for future research.

The Conclusion should preferably be presented in coherent paragraphs rather than a numbered list.

 

LIMITATIONS AND IMPLICATIONS

Authors are encouraged to explicitly discuss relevant limitations of the study.

Limitations should be presented honestly and should not undermine the validity of the research unnecessarily.

Where appropriate, the manuscript should identify:

1. Theoretical implications;
2. Methodological implications;
3. Managerial/practical implications;
4. Policy implications; and/or
5. Implications for tourism destination development.

 

TABLES AND FIGURES

Tables and figures should be used only when they contribute meaningfully to the presentation of the research.

Each table and figure must:

1. Have a clear title;
2. Be numbered consecutively;
3. Be referred to in the text;
4. Be readable;
5. Identify the data source where applicable; and
6. Comply with copyright requirements.

Authors must obtain permission for copyrighted materials where necessary.

Tables should not duplicate information already presented in the text.

 

EQUATIONS, STATISTICAL RESULTS, AND DATA PRESENTATION

Quantitative studies should report statistical results accurately and transparently.

Where relevant, authors should provide:

1. Descriptive statistics;
2. Statistical tests;
3. Effect sizes;
4. Confidence intervals;
5. Significance levels; and
6. Other relevant statistical information.

The statistical methods should be appropriate to the research design and data characteristics.

Authors must not manipulate, selectively report, or misrepresent statistical findings.

 

REFERENCES

Media Wisata uses the American Psychological Association (APA) 7th edition referencing style.

     Authors are strongly encouraged to use reference-management software such as:

• Mendeley;
• Zotero;
• EndNote; or
• equivalent reference-management applications.

1. All references cited in the manuscript must appear in the reference list.
2. All references listed must be cited in the manuscript.
3. Reference quality
4. Authors should prioritize:
5. peer-reviewed journal articles;
6. high-quality scholarly books;
7. conference proceedings where appropriate;
8. official institutional publications;
9. research reports; and
10. other authoritative academic sources.
11. Authors should prioritize recent and relevant literature, while seminal or foundational sources may be retained when theoretically necessary.
12. A minimum of 15 scholarly references is recommended for a standard research article. Editors and reviewers may require additional references when necessary to establish an adequate state of the art.
13. Authors are encouraged to cite relevant articles published by Media Wisata when genuinely relevant to the manuscript. However, citation to Media Wisata articles must never be excessive, artificial, or undertaken solely to increase journal citation metrics.

 

DOI AND REFERENCE VERIFICATION

Where available, authors should provide the DOI for cited journal articles.

Authors are responsible for ensuring that:

1. Author names are correct;
2. Publication years are correct;
3. Article titles are accurate;
4. Journal titles are correct;
5. Volume and issue information is accurate; and
6. Doi or url information is functional where applicable.

 

ORIGINALITY AND EXCLUSIVE SUBMISSION

Manuscripts submitted to Media Wisata must:

1. Be original;
2. Not have been formally published elsewhere;
3. Not be simultaneously submitted to another journal;
4. Not constitute redundant or duplicate publication; and
5. Appropriately acknowledge all sources used.

Submission of substantially the same manuscript to more than one journal simultaneously is considered unethical publishing practice.

 

SIMILARITY CHECK

1. All submitted manuscripts must undergo a similarity check before peer review.
2. Authors are required to submit the similarity-checking report together with the manuscript as a supplementary submission file.
3. The similarity index tolerated by Media Wisata is a maximum of 10%.
4. The similarity check should preferably be conducted using recognized similarity-checking software.
5. For the purpose of editorial screening, authors are encouraged to conduct the similarity check using settings that exclude: Bibliography/reference list; Author names and affiliations; Quotations where appropriate; and Other legitimate sources of unavoidable textual similarity.
6. A similarity index of 10% or below does not automatically establish that a manuscript is free from plagiarism. The editorial team may conduct substantive assessment of suspected plagiarism, inappropriate text reuse, self-plagiarism, or other forms of academic misconduct.
7. Manuscripts exceeding the 10% threshold may be returned to authors for revision before entering the peer-review process.

 

DECLARATIONS

Authors should include a Declarations section before the References.

Depending on the nature of the study, the following statements may be required:

1 Conflict of Interest

Authors must disclose any financial, professional, personal, or institutional relationship that could reasonably be perceived as influencing the research or its interpretation.

If no conflict exists, authors should state:

• Conflict of Interest
• The authors declare that there is no conflict of interest related to the publication of this article.

2 Funding

Authors must disclose all sources of financial support for the research.

If there was no external funding:

• Funding
• This research received no specific external funding.

3 Author Contributions

Where applicable, authors should describe their respective contributions to the research and manuscript.

4 Ethical Approval

Where applicable, authors should provide information regarding ethical approval or ethical clearance.

5 Data Availability

Where appropriate, authors should state whether research data are available and under what conditions

6 Generative AI and AI-Assisted Technologies

Authors must disclose material use of generative AI or AI-assisted technologies in manuscript preparation or research.

If no such technology was used:

Generative AI and AI-Assisted Technologies

The authors declare that no generative AI or AI-assisted technologies were used in the preparation of this manuscript.

If AI was used:

Generative AI and AI-Assisted Technologies

During the preparation of this manuscript, the authors used [NAME OF AI TOOL] for [PURPOSE]. The authors reviewed, verified, and edited all AI-assisted outputs and take full responsibility for the accuracy, originality, and integrity of the published work.

Generative AI tools cannot be listed as authors or co-authors.

If AI is used as part of the research methodology, data analysis, coding, image processing, or another substantive research procedure, its use must also be described in the relevant methodological section.

 

GENERATIVE AI AND AI-ASSISTED TECHNOLOGIES

Media Wisata permits responsible and transparent use of generative AI and AI-assisted technologies.

Authors may use AI tools for appropriate supporting purposes, including:

1. Language improvement;
2. Grammar and spelling;
3. Translation;
4. Preliminary organization of ideas;
5. Coding assistance; and
6. Other legitimate research-support activities.

Authors remain fully responsible for the accuracy, originality, and integrity of the manuscript.

AI must not be used to:

1. Fabricate research data;
2. Falsify findings;
3. Fabricate references;
4. Manipulate evidence;
5. Generate misleading research content;
6. Conceal plagiarism; or
7. Otherwise engage in academic misconduct.

AI cannot replace the author's intellectual contribution or responsibility.

For detailed requirements, authors must comply with the Media Wisata Generative AI and AI-Assisted Technologies Policy.

 

RESEARCH ETHICS

Research involving human participants, personal data, vulnerable populations, animals, or other ethically sensitive subjects must comply with applicable ethical standards.

Authors must obtain ethical approval where required by applicable institutional or regulatory requirements.

Where informed consent is required, authors must ensure that appropriate consent has been obtained.

Authors must not publish personally identifiable information without appropriate consent or legal/ethical justification.

 

DATA INTEGRITY AND RESEARCH TRANSPARENCY

Authors must accurately report research data and methods.

Authors must not:

1. Fabricate data;
2. Falsify data;
3. Manipulate results;
4. Selectively omit relevant findings in a misleading manner; or
5. Misrepresent research procedures.

Where reasonably requested by the Editor, authors should be prepared to provide supporting research materials, data, analytical procedures, or other information necessary to verify the integrity of the research, subject to ethical, legal, privacy, and confidentiality limitations.

 

AUTHORSHIP

Authorship should reflect substantial intellectual contribution to the research and manuscript.

Individuals listed as authors should have contributed substantially to one or more of the following:

1. Conception or design of the research;
2. Data collection;
3. Analysis or interpretation;
4. Development of the theoretical or methodological framework;
5. Drafting or substantial revision of the manuscript; and
6. Approval and responsibility for the final version.

All listed authors must approve the final manuscript and agree to its submission.

Individuals who contributed to the research but do not meet authorship criteria may be acknowledged appropriately.

 

CORRESPONDING AUTHOR

The corresponding author is responsible for communication with the editorial office.

The corresponding author must ensure that:

1. All authors have approved the submitted manuscript;
2. Author information is accurate;
3. The manuscript is not simultaneously submitted elsewhere;
4. Required declarations have been completed; and
5. All required submission files have been uploaded.

 

COPYRIGHT AND LICENSING

Authors retain appropriate rights to their scholarly work subject to the journal's copyright and licensing terms.

By submitting a manuscript, authors confirm that they have the right to submit and publish the work and that the manuscript does not infringe third-party copyright or intellectual property rights.

Authors are responsible for obtaining permission to reproduce copyrighted materials where required.

Media Wisata publishes articles under the license stated on the journal website.

 

PEER REVIEW

All manuscripts that pass the initial editorial screening are subject to peer review according to the journal's peer-review policy.

The editorial team may reject a manuscript before peer review when it:

1. Falls outside the journal's scope;
2. Fails to meet minimum methodological or scholarly standards;
3. Does not comply with the author guidelines;
4. Has excessive similarity;
5. Raises substantial ethical concerns;
6. Lacks sufficient novelty or scholarly contribution; or
7. Is otherwise unsuitable for publication.

Passing the technical screening does not guarantee acceptance.

 

REVIEWER CONFIDENTIALITY

Authors should understand that manuscripts submitted for review are treated as confidential documents.

Reviewers are expected to maintain confidentiality and objective evaluation.

Reviewers must disclose relevant conflicts of interest and must not use confidential information obtained during peer review for personal or professional advantage.

Reviewers must not upload confidential manuscript content to publicly accessible generative AI systems where this could compromise confidentiality.

 

POST-PUBLICATION CORRECTIONS

Authors have an ongoing responsibility for the integrity of their published work.

If authors discover a significant error or inaccuracy after publication, they should promptly notify the Editor.

Media Wisata may publish corrections, retractions, expressions of concern, or other appropriate notices when necessary to maintain the integrity of the scholarly record.

 

CHECKLIST BEFORE SUBMISSION

Before submitting a manuscript to Media Wisata, authors must confirm that all of the following requirements have been fulfilled:

☐ Scope, Originality, and Submission Ethics

The manuscript is relevant to the scope of Media Wisata, is original, has not been published previously, is not under consideration by another journal, and all authors have approved its submission.

☐ Manuscript Structure and Format

The manuscript follows the Media Wisata template, formatting, structure, title, bilingual abstract, keywords, and other manuscript preparation requirements specified in the Author Guidelines.

☐ Scientific Quality and Research Methodology

The manuscript clearly presents the research problem, state of the art, research gap, novelty, objectives, methodology, results, discussion, and conclusion, with sufficient methodological information to support the validity and reproducibility of the research.

☐ References, Tables, Figures, and Citations

All tables and figures are properly numbered, cited, and sourced; citations and references are consistent; and the reference list follows APA 7th edition with relevant and verifiable scholarly sources, including DOI/URL where applicable.

☐ Similarity and Originality Verification

The manuscript has undergone a similarity check with a maximum similarity index of 10%, and the similarity report has been uploaded as a supplementary file. Authors understand that the similarity threshold is a screening requirement and does not by itself determine whether plagiarism has occurred.

☐ 6. Research Ethics and Declarations

Where applicable, the manuscript includes appropriate declarations regarding research ethics/ethical approval, conflict of interest, funding, author contributions, and data availability, and all necessary permissions for copyrighted materials have been obtained.

☐ Generative AI, Authorship, and Final Responsibility

Any use of Generative AI or AI-Assisted Technologies in preparing the manuscript has been disclosed in accordance with Media Wisata policy. AI tools are not listed as authors, and all authors accept responsibility for the accuracy, originality, integrity, and final content of the manuscript.

 

FINAL NOTE

Compliance with these Guidelines for Authors is the responsibility of the authors.

The Editor reserves the right to return manuscripts that do not meet the journal's minimum requirements before peer review.

Compliance with the technical requirements does not guarantee acceptance. Publication decisions are based on the manuscript's scholarly quality, originality, methodological rigor, relevance, contribution, ethical integrity, and the outcome of the peer-review process.

Media Wisata is committed to maintaining a transparent, rigorous, ethical, and continuously improving scholarly publication process in accordance with applicable regulations and recognized principles of publication ethics.
